Embrace The Art of Wintering

Embrace The Art of Wintering

I love the notion of "Wintering" - like Donna Ashworth describes it in her beautiful words. It's natural for us all to want to retreat in January and hibernate like everything around us in Nature. It is particularly needed after a hectic Christmastime with lots of socialising and entertaining or general busyness. It's a great time to soak up lots of family time, embrace not making plans, slower days and cosy moments at home.

Here are some ways you can embrace the art of Wintering and allow yourself time to slow down and rest in the season of staying in.

Things I love to do at this time which feel like a nice reset - no big resolutions or to do list, just simple little things that can help clear a busy mind or feel nice to do.

1. Create A Cosy Space To Retreat To

Whether it's your bed layered with cosy bedding, your favourite reading chair with a soft squishy cushion or soft moody lighting for a relaxing cosy glow. Your surroundings have a massive impact on your mind and how you rest.

2. Pottering With Bulbs

During Covid like lots of others I discovered Willow Crossley and her magical world of flowering - something I've always been interested in and worked a lot with as a wedding stylist. I did some of her online courses and got totally into bulbs, seeds and flower-arranging. Playing with flowers and creating little arrangements are without a doubt my favourite thing to do at home and it is as Willow says, extremely "happy-making". You can get totally lost in it and it's funny the kick you get out of it when you've grown something yourself! Since Christmas I've transplanted the hyacinth bulbs that I used on our Christmas table into glass bell jars and supported them with gorgeous lichen-covered branches. The smell from the hyacinths are divine and when they outgrow these I'll plant them outside. I highly recommend it.

3. Bake Banana Bread

I generally use Roz Purcell's Vegan recipe for the bread and I recently came across a recipe for Maple butter! Divine slathered on a hot-from-the-oven slice with a mug of tea !

4. Add Colour To Beat The January Blues

January can be very dark and gloomy and the house can feel bare and lonesome after all the Christmas decorations and lights are taken down along with the joy they brought. Adding colour is essential to banish the January Blues! Check out our best-selling colourful striped jugs and handmade ruffled cushions for a colour injection.
