The Art of Layering

Creating a Layered Home

Our homes are constantly evolving, growing with our families, needs and demands and shaped by our interests, where we've been and special memories we've created. It should tell your story and make you feel happy.

Layering is allowing your home to grow with you and not being in a rush to get it "finished". It's worth taking the time to get to know your home and what you need from it. Things don't always need to match - having mismatched pieces creates a more collected feel.

Layer with Intention

A piece that tells a story is your secret weapon. A timeworn chippy painted cabinet sourced in India holds stories of its previous lives and will never not look incredible! Whether it's tucked into a corner of a cosy cottage or next to a streamlined contemporary kitchen - its rich patina and texture is game-changing. Vintage or found objects add soul and character and create a more interesting diverse interior.

Layer with Texture

Mixing materials and finishes adds depth, warmth and personality to a space, preventing it from looking flat or monotonous. You want the eye to be constantly exploring but in a relaxing more interesting way. Think glossy with matte, rough with smooth or raw tarnished metal with warm rustic wood.

Layered Lighting

Lighting is your mood-maker. Get it wrong and it throws the whole room off. Think of a restaurant you've been to - great food, comfy seats but horrible harsh lighting - it would be enough to make me want to get up and leave lol! Avoid harsh overhead lights where possible and create a relaxing moody glow with pendants on dimmers, lots of table lamps and candles.

Here in the hall of our home, a console table sourced in India handmade out of reclaimed wood sits happily under a mixture of art. A large contemporary print by Irish artist Lola Donoghue hangs under a piece of architectural salvage sourced in India.  Vintage illustrations and oil paintings from Italy and Peru add to the eclectic display of art.

The reclaimed wood candle holders and timeworn patina of the terracotta pot offer a contrast against the smooth contemporary striped pitcher and the ruffled marble bowl.

Fresh flowers, foliage, living or faux plants will always add more life to any display and will help to soften any hard lines or materials.
